Bass fishing
Sport fishing enthusiasts love fishing for the aggressive smallmouth bass. Because this species is a spring spawner, the bass fishing season generally opens in early summer.
Pike fishing
The northern pike is an extremely aggressive predator. Its combative nature gives full meaning to the term "sport fishing." Eaten fresh, this fish is delicious. This opportunistic carnivore feeds mainly on other fish, but it also eats insects, crayfish, frogs, mice, muskrats and even ducklings.
Walleye fishing
Walleye is the fish of choice among gourmets. Catching a walleye may not be very exciting, but its delectable flesh will leave your taste buds wanting more. This species is undoubtedly one of the most fished in North America.
Sturgeon fishing
The sturgeon is definitely one of the most impressive fish inhabiting Sépaq waters. Measuring 90 to 140 cm long and weighing in at 5 to 35 kg, this fish is impressive to see. Its heavy, torpedo-shaped body is covered in rows of bony scales that give it a prehistoric look. The sturgeon is a ground fish that prefers muddy areas.
Musky fishing
You can go musky fishing at the Réserve faunique de Portneuf, where you can book a combination small-game hunting and musky fishing package in the fall.
Landlocked salmon fishing
Landlocked salmon is Atlantic salmon that lives in lakes. Very popular with fishers, this fish dwells mainly in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean and Outaouais regions. Elsewhere, such as in the Mauricie, landlocked salmon were introduced during the days of private clubs.
Salmon fishing
You can fish for Atlantic salmon at certain wildlife reserves and on Anticosti Island, which offers an American plan accommodation package on the incredible Jupiter river and an European plan accommodation package on the La Loutre river. To go salmon fishing, you must have a salmon licence and a right of access pass for this type of fishing. In certain areas, salmon fishing is offered by dealers.
A small population of kokanee salmon, probably the only one east of the Rockies, lives in the waters of the Réserve faunique du Saint-Maurice. Try your luck at Lac Normand! You don't need a salmon licence for this species.
Trout fishing
There are several species of trout. The brook trout, commonly known as speckled trout, lives in all regions of the Sépaq network where fishing is permitted. The sea trout is an anadromous brook trout (i.e. it returns to the sea to feed). It is an aggressive trout species, appreciated by fish lovers for its delicious taste. The lake char or lake trout is a salmonid that lives in deep lakes. Larger than the speckled trout, the lake char's flesh is more flavourful. The splake trout (a hybrid obtained by fertilizing brook trout eggs with lake trout milt) is present in certain lakes populated by species that are considered undesirable. This trout species does not compete with the brook trout or the lake trout. A cousin of the splake trout, the wendigo is a hybrid produced by fertilizing lake trout eggs with brook trout milt. The highly aggressive Québec red trout, also known as arctic char or mountain trout resembles the speckled trout.
