Fishing
Fishing is one of the featured activities at Réserve faunique Rouge-Matawin where anglers have access to over 450 bodies of water. Different options are available depending on the type of stay visitors choose. The list of lakes and bodies of water offered in combination with different packages and formulas is available in the Practical Information section.
Fishing activities in Réserve faunique Rouge-Matawin follow a plan determined in advance and approved by the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune. The list of bodies of water available may vary depending on road conditions and established quotas.
Catch and possession limits:
Speckled trout: 10
Northern pike and pike: a total of 5 fish, but no more than 3 pike
Lake trout: 2
Bass: 5
Perch: 50
Day Fishing
Over 175 lakes are available for day fishing fans.
New in 2008 :
It is now possible to reserve your day fishing activity 4 months in advance. For example, if you want to fish on June 24, you should reserve on February 24. Online reservations

Day Fishing With Reservations One Day in Advance (Registration Centres)
Certain lakes that are more difficult to reach can only be reserved by calling one of the wildlife reserve’s registration centres (24 h in advance between 10 AM and 8:30 PM) or in person the night before the day of fishing.
Warning: Lakes that can be reserved one day in advance are also available for fishing-camping trips. They can be reserved for two consecutive days with two nights of camping. Please note that a lake may have been reserved the night before by a fishing-camping customer.
Fishing Adventure With Reservations A Day in Advance (Registration Centre)
This day-fishing activity takes place on lakes that are difficult to reach. There are no signs and there may not be any information about the state of the fish populations. Neither access to these lakes or fishing success is guaranteed. A maximum of one boat per lake or three people fishing with waders is authorized. Over 180 lakes are available for this mode. These lakes are reserved for adventurers (map, compass, GPS…). Portages in quads are allowed. Customers can fish in these lakes with waders or a personal boat. Regardless of whether the roads and trails are in an adequate shape, whether you find the lake or not or whether you fish or not, there are no refunds. Consult the Day Fishing leaflet.
Anglers can reserve these lakes by calling one of the reserve’s registration centres one day in advance between 10 AM and 8:30 PM, seven days a week.

Day Fishing Without Reservations
Random draws no longer take place each morning. Anglers are invited to go to the registration centre to choose a lake from among the available bodies of water.
Fishing-Camping
You can reserve a 2-day/2-night fishing-camping package for two or three people. For this package, fishing starts in the morning after the first night of camping; it is not possible to fish on the evening of arrival. Please note that fishing-camping sites are limited and offered according to a specific calendar. You can reserve this packagewith the Sépaq Sales and Reservations Office.
Fishing With Accommodations
Certain lakes are reserved for anglers staying at the reserve (in a cabin, rustic shelter or tent cabin). Customers must register the day of their arrival and, if two lake choices are offered, choose their body of water for the entire stay.
Customers who reserved a cabin with a vacationing package and who want to fish during their stay must reserve their lake according to the terms and conditions for day fishing.
Hunting
Moose Hunting
Density of the moose population: 3.1/10 km2 based on the data of the survey carried out in 1996. During the 2007 season, a moose with a 65-inch set of antlers was bagged.
Season: From September 5 to October 9, 2008
Moose hunting in Réserve faunique Rouge-Matawin is subject to the
random draw. The attribution of accommodations has been revised in order to limit the distance to your hunting sector.
Quota-based moose hunting ensures sound management of this wildlife resource. Family Package to introduce the new generation to hunting.
In keeping with current regulations, the 2004-2010 moose management plan authorizes the attribution of hunting permits for adult female moose specific to the wildlife reserve. To increase your chances of hunting success, participate in this draw in accordance with current terms and conditions.
White-Tailed Deer Hunting
This hunt has been going on for less than 10 years. An 18-point antlered deer was harvested starting the very first year. Réserve faunique Rouge-Matawin has a 70% success rate per group of hunters.
Season: From October 12 to November 9, 2008
White-tailed deer hunting is subject to the random draw. The attribution of accommodations has been revised in order to limit the distance to your hunting sector.
Small Game Hunting
The wildlife reserve has been authorized to open the small game hunting season on September 5, 2008. The small game hunting territory will be restricted to a zone in the La Macaza sector, in order to avoid disturbing moose hunters. In addition, the number of hunters will be limited to the capacity of the Sapin (4 pers./cabin) and the two prospector’s camps (2 to 4 pers./camp).
Period: From September 5 to October 9, 2008 (Hunting with accommodations in La Macaza sector only)
Period: From October 10 to November 9, 2008 (Day hunting and accommodations hunting in the Saint-Michel-des-Saints sector)
This form of hunting, which is practiced on a specific territory of the wildlife reserve, allows enthusiasts to harvest Ruffed Grouse, Spruce Grouse and snowshoe hare.
Waterfowl Hunting
To hunt for woodcock, geese or ducks in a wildlife reserve, hunters must hold the appropriate federal licence and acquire an access right, as is the case for small game hunting.
