Activities and Services
Fishing

All anglers who take advantage of a cabin or campground can obtain a daily access right for fishing unless it is already included in their accommodation package.

Fishing is managed by following a plan determined ahead of time and approved by the Ministère des Ressources naturelles, de la Faune et des Parcs du Québec.

Season: From May 30 to September 1, 2008.

Catch and possession limits:

Brook trout in lakes Mistassini, Albanel and Waconichi: 15 or 5 kg +1 fish, whichever comes first
Brook trout in the other bodies of water: 15 or 2.5 kg + 1 fish, whichever comes first
Lake trout: 3
  Northern pike: 8
Walleye: 8

Lures

Réserve faunique Assinica and Réserve faunique des Lacs-Albanel-Mistassini-et-Waconichi are ideal for sportfishers. Northern pike, walleye, lake trout and brook trout abound in the waters of these territories. All the lures suggested for these various species generally give good results. In June lake trout are near the surface, and fly-fishing enthusiasts can catch this species using streamers. The same is true for northern pike in late June and early July. For spinning, the various waving and spinning lures and plugs are effective; make sure that you have a good variety of colours. As for metallic lures, silver-copper and silver-blue are winning combinations. For trolling, heavy spoons on a monofilament (10 or 12 lb resistance) are recommended.

Safety

The immense size of lakes Albanel and Mistassini and their remote nature require the use of watercraft over 5 m in length equipped with at least a 25-hp motor and an auxiliary motor (in case there is a problem with the main motor). We strongly recommend that you fish on the side of the lake where you are staying; that way, you will not have to cross the lake in bad weather. Bring along two bailer scoops, two oars, a water-safety kit, as well as the necessary material to make minor repairs to your boat (fiberglass). Warm clothing and rainwear are a "must" given the frequent temperature variations. Make sure that you always keep your change of clothing and your sleeping bag in waterproof bags. When camping, do not store your food in your tent, and above all do not cook in your tent as the odours attract animals. Be sure to bring along one or two days of extra food if you decide to go to a remote area.

Outdoor Activities

Canoe-Camping

There are no organized or laid-out itineraries. Canoe-camping enthusiasts who want to go to the territories of Réserve faunique Assinica and Réserve faunique des Lacs-Albanel-Mistassini-et-Waconichi must apply in writing for authorization to the director of the reserves, specifying the detailed route they will follow, their daily travel distances, the number of adults and children under 18, as well as the name of each person, and their experience.
