Pleasures of the Beach
Centre touristique du Lac-Kénogami, on the banks of the second largest lake in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, is a great place for outdoor activities and summer holidays. The Resort covers a 5 square kilometre area. Lac Kénogami, a magnificent 55.8-square-kilometre body of water sprinkled with one hundred thirty-six islands, offers visitors the incomparable beauty of water and forest landscapes that stretch out to meet the rounded summits of the réserve faunique des Laurentides. At the southwest of the
lake, the Vacation Resort occupies a 7-kilometre wooded peninsula, bordered by a beach of fine sand. Appreciated for the beauty and peacefulness of its campsites, the Resort also rents cabins and mini-cabins located directly on the beach. The pleasures of the lake take centre stage among the recreational activities visitors have to choose from: swimming, canoeing, kayaking, beach volleyball, landlocked salmon fishing … or just relaxing by the water. Many walking trails, also accessible to bicycles,
meander along the peninsula. Campers and vacationers have access to all the basic services: community hall, laundromat, mini convenience store, snack bar and outdoor equipment rental.
A Little History
In 1535, when Jacques Cartier first heard tell of the Saguenay, the region was inhabited by Innus, who were then called the Montagnais. This Algonquian nation gave Lac Kénogami its name, which means "long lake", the large elongated body of water that is the source of the Chicoutimi River. At the time, Lac Kénogami was the centre of a communication network linking the Saguenay to Lac Saint-Jean, and further north, to James Bay. For a little over 250 years, canoes loaded with furs navigated
Lac Kénogami on their way to Tadoussac trading posts and then, starting in 1671, to the Chicoutimi trading post. More...
