Several trails make it possible to explore the park’s natural environment, either through forested areas or across open summits. Trails stretch from 1 km to 17 km in length, ranging from easy to very difficult.

Hiking on Mont Jacques-Cartier: essential information

Parc National de la Gaspésie is a destination that long-distance hikers won’t want to miss. Intersecting with the International Appalachian Trail, the 100-km section of the park is known for its challenging terrain and spectacular scenery.

The trail and accommodations (huts and rustic campgrounds) are accessible from July 1 to September 30. The entire crossing generally takes 7 to 9 days, but several itineraries lasting 2 to 7 days are available thanks to the transportation service and the availability of accommodations.

Please note: Long-distance hiking requires careful planning. Consult the preparation guide to organize your stay.

The short- and long-distance hiking trails in Parc National de la Gaspésie offer technically challenging and varied circuits suitable for all trail runners. Several circuit options are available thanks to the daily transportation service, which lets you leave your car at your arrival point.

It is recommended that you bring first aid, communication, and safety equipment, as well as clothing suitable for mountain conditions.

Ultra-trail des Chic-Chocs is an annual trail run organized in the park by Choc Événements. Circuits ranging from 5 km to 160 km are at your disposal, so you can discover the Chic Chocs in a supervised setting.

Mountain biking and gravel biking are only permitted in certain sectors of the park:

• Secondary and tertiary roads
• Pic de l'Aube trail, between the parking lot and La Mésange hut*

Bicycles are prohibited on all other trails in the park.

* Pic de l'Aube trail is shared with hikers. Caution and courtesy are essential. Bicycles must be left at La Mésange hut and the peak can only be reached on foot.

The rental of non‑motorized watercraft is available at the Lac Cascapédia campground Registration Centre, allowing visitors to explore this 4‑km lake, which is ideal for long outings.

If you have your own watercraft, you can explore the following park lakes:

• Western sector: Lac Cascapédia, Lac Paul and Lac Noir
• Eastern sector: Lac du Syndicat, Lac à Claude and Lac à Pierre

• June to October, depending on access conditions (non-motorized personal boat)

Descending Rivière Sainte-Anne and Rivière Sainte-Anne Nord-Est is permitted under certain conditions.

• Downstream from the junction with Rivière Sainte-Anne Nord-Est (de la Rivière campground sector) : descent permitted year-round, depending on access conditions.
• Upstream from the junction: descent permitted year-round, except from July 1 to August 31, in order to protect the harlequin duck.

From June 15 to September 30, the presence of salmon anglers requires respectful coexistence between users. Consult the guide to best practices for anglers and paddlers.

Three lakes are accessible for day fishing. A rowboat is provided on site. Anglers can fish for speckled trout and arctic charr. A provincial fishing licence and a fishing right of access are mandatory. Wade fishing is not permitted.

Motor required: a motor is required for fishing on the Lac Cascapédia and Lac à Claude. The park does not rent motors: you must bring your own. Please refer to the Day Fishing Plan for recommandations regarding the type of motor to use. 

Daily catch and possession limit (per angler):

• Arctic char: 2
• Speckled trout : 7 (new regulatory catch and possession limit), including a maximum of 2 arctic char

Practical guide for apprentice enthusiasts

The Cascapédia cabins, located along the lakeshore, offer a comfortable setting for a peaceful fishing getaway. The body of water is known for its fine specimens of brook trout and Arctic char. A provincial fishing licence as well as fishing rights are required. Wade fishing is not permitted.

Motor required: a motor is required for fishing on the lake. The park does not rent motors, you must bring your own. Please refer to the Fishing Plan for recommandations regarding the type of motor to use.

In the upstream sector of Rivière Saint-Anne, salmon fishing is practised from June 15 to September 30. You can fish with waders. A variety of fishing packages with a guide and accommodation are available.

Against the backdrop of a winter wonderland, snowshoe buffs can enjoy many trails in the park and on the territory of Réserve faunique des Chic-Chocs.

For fans of backcountry skiing, different circuits are marked but not groomed. These trails allow you access to trails near the Discovery and Visitors Centre or more remote areas in the park.

Is this your first mountain skiing experience? Discover this activity with an experienced guide that will accompany you all day long to ensure a safe and memorable outing. Details

Long-distance backcountry skiing enthusiasts can take advantage of over a hundred kilometers of marked trails, offering itineraries from 2 to several days, with overnight stays in mountain huts.

A baggage transport service between huts facilitates movements. Hut and baggage transport service reservations can be made by phone only at 1-800-665-6527.

La Mésange hut, located near mythical Pic de l'Aube, will once again be available for rental in winter 2026. Please note, however, that no luggage transport services will be offered. Visitors wishing to stay there will have to be self-sufficient and carry their own luggage.

Parc national de la Gaspésie offers 3 groomed cross-country ski trails near the Discovery and Visitors Centre. These trails are groomed regularly but not mechanically tracked.

Our groomed fatbike trails run alongside our cross-country ski trails. Accessible trails are shared with other users. Courtesy is important. Tracks are set and packed depending on the snow conditions (irregular schedule).

The Gaspésie Massif, composed of the Chic-Chocs and McGerrigle mountains, supports a variety of plant communities. From balsam fir to yellow birch to alpine tundra, these ecosystems are home to many animal species.

Cohabitation with vulnerable or threatened species

We ask for your cooperation to ensure a harmonious cohabitation between visitors and the wildlife present on the territory. It is essential to preserve the peace and quiet of the various species by keeping a safe distance from them, especially those considered vulnerable or threatened, such as caribou. These species are very sensitive to disturbance and any situation that could lead to an interaction with humans must be avoided.
