Parc national de la Pointe‑Taillon

Scientific Research

Major Research Orientations at Parc national de la Pointe-Taillon

Having extensive knowledge of the parks to better preserve them is the foundation that justifies the efforts invested in inventories, monitoring programs and scientific research.  At Parc national de la Pointe-Taillon the wetlands are abundant and diversified. The heart of the peninsula is a vast peatbog that shelters rare plants. The park has been open since 1985, but knowledge about the species that live here is fragmentary. Special attention is paid to the flora and fauna of the peatbogs. Volunteer naturalists share their knowledge about this field with us.

The sandy edge of Pointe Taillon is the habitat of plants that reflect a postglacial marine invasion. These plants, called relicts, are monitored to determine the condition of the colonies and their distribution.

The monitoring of shore erosion in the park is also an important issue, which is documented annually.

Spruce Grouse

On the Lac Saint-Jean Plain, the stretch of forests hospitable to Spruce Grouse (Falcipennis canadensis) is getting smaller. At Parc national de la Pointe-Taillon, telemetric monitoring is used to study the condition of the population and the use they make of the protected territory and its periphery.

For research purposes, the grouse were fitted with transmitters and bands. A receiver then captures the sounds they make. When the bird is located, its position is geo-referenced and the site’s vegetation is noted. Observations to date seem to indicate that the population has a rapid renewal rate and reliable productivity. This study will enrich our knowledge on this population and will also eventually lead to other information about whether this community benefits from areas on the periphery of the protected territory that have been transformed by people.
