If your smoke detector alarm goes off:
- Call 9-1-1 or the fire department.
- Only use a fire extinguisher if the fire has just started. Stand with your back to an exit and aim at the base of the flames.
- Close the doors and windows of the room in which the fire started to prevent it from spreading.
- Don’t enter a room if the door is hot to the touch.
- Have all occupants of the accommodation unit leave calmly and quickly. Crawl below the smoke to avoid inhaling toxic gases.
- Count the number of people who have been evacuated.
- If the fire starts at night, wrap yourself in blankets instead of searching for your clothes.
- Go to your outdoor assembly point or a nearby accommodation unit. Never go back into a burning building.
- If you are unable to get out, close the door of the room you are in. Use damp cloths to seal the door and spray it with water if possible.
- Lay on the ground, placing a damp cloth over your mouth, stay close to the windows and signal your presence when help arrives.
- Report the incident to a person responsible for the establishment as soon as possible.
