Under the Ecological Reserves Act, in 1994, the Ministère de l'Environnement et de la Faune created Réserve écologique des Grands-Ormes. It was enlarged during the creation of Parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie and now extends over an area of 7 km2. This ecological reserve ensures the protection of a toposequence of plant groups characteristic of the Charlevoix mountains and alpine and subalpine ecosystems, which are part of the fir-yellow birch and balsam fir-white birch domains. An ecological reserve is primarily a territory preserved in its natural state. The purpose of such a status is the protection of ecosystems and threatened or vulnerable species. It is therefore a recognition of the biological or ecological importance of a site, which outweighs its potential for exploitation, development and its economic value. Only research activities, and if applicable, guided and supervised educational activities are authorized. |
