Ecological Integrity

The Environmental Indicators Monitoring Program at Parc national de la Yamaska

Since 2003, the Environmental Indicators Monitoring Program (EIMP) (see also the summary, in French only) has been implemented at Parc national de la Yamaska. A total of 23 indicators are monitored. Among these, every year frog populations are studied and a census is taken of breeding bird populations.

Frogs have moist, permeable skin that allows them to “breathe”. However, their thin skin makes these animals sensitive to changes in their living environment. Frogs are therefore precious sentinels of the quality of our environment.

Birds are everywhere in the park, and very easy to spot for those who take the time. But the reduction of forests and the fragmentation of habitats in southern Québec affect some bird populations. The park is home to a great diversity of species because of the variety of habitats provided by Réservoir Choinière and the different types of forests. Their continued presence is indicative of the quality of the environment.
