Scientific Research

Major Research Orientations at Parc national de Plaisance

Having extensive knowledge of the parks to better preserve them is the foundation that justifies the efforts invested in inventories, monitoring programs and scientific research. Here are some areas of concern to us at this time and to which we are directing our efforts:

  • The impact of cycling trails on turtle reproduction
  • Knowledge acquisition on species at risk living in the park
  • Population development of beaver

A Beaver Population Under Surveillance

Aerial inventories conducted in 2006 showed that the park has the highest concentration of beaver colonies in Québec’s undeveloped areas. Over 44 active lodges were found, corresponding to a population of about 180 individuals. The presence of so many beavers in a 3 km2 area of the park’s forest has a definite impact on ecosystem balance. In 2014, a new comprehensive inventory of this population was conducted and more than 75 active huts were listed!
