Ecological Integrity

The Environmental Indicators Monitoring Program at Parc national d'Anticosti

Since 2004, the Environmental Indicators Monitoring Program (EIMP) (see also the summary, in French only) has been implemented at Parc national d'Anticosti. A total of 21 indicators are monitored, including a rare plant, the Calypso.

This small orchid is usually found in old fir stands, but its habitat is declining due to the white-tailed deer’s intensive browsing on balsam fir. Since the tree has trouble regenerating, other plant species, usually less popular among deer, take the place of fir, limiting the habitats required for this rare plant.

All of these indicators will allow us to get an idea of how the ecological integrity is developing over time, thus enriching our knowledge of the park.
