Parc national d'Opémican

Park Experience

AT THE CROSSROADS

Established in southwestern Québec, Parc national d’Opémican hugs the border between Québec and Ontario about 35 km south of the town of Ville-Marie and 15 km north of Témiscaming.

The park’s landscape is characterized by a plateau of hills with flattened peaks, through which several rocky cliffs cut the horizon, mainly along Lac Témiscamingue. The famous Harricana Mornaine, one of the largest glaciofluvial deposits in North America, crosses the territory at Pointe Opémican.

Pine forests, lakes and wetlands are abundant. The location of the park, which straddles the boreal forest and the deciduous forest, has led to the formation of rich habitats and great biodiversity, including vulnerable species.

The territory is marked by an extraordinary archeological, cultural and historical heritage. It exhibits traces of a rich past, having served as a travel route for aboriginals and settlers, forest depots, logging camps and a naval shipyard. Nine archeological sites are currently known, but there is great potential for discovering more. One can’t visit the park without taking in the historical Opémican site and its buildings, including Auberge Jodoin, which was built in 1883.

Gliding Through the Water

Once the park is open to the public, visitors will be able to explore the numerous waterways of Parc national d’Opémican by canoe or kayak.

Rivière Kipwa is 16 km long, has natural banks and a total vertical drop of 90 metres, making it a great place for these sports. More experienced canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts will love the class 2 to 5 rapids, which can also be avoided by taking portage trails.

For families and visitors looking for peace and fulfillment, excursions on Lac Kipawa or Lac Témiscamingue will be the perfect choice. The many islands and bays of Lac Kipawa are fascinating, with a high potential for wildlife watching. Lac Témiscamingue on the other hand offers a sense of immensity. The steep cliffs around the lake make for a magnificent landscape that should appeal to visitors of all ages.
