Ecological Integrity

The Environmental Indicators Monitoring Program at Parc national d'Aiguebelle

Since 2004, the Environmental Indicators Monitoring Program, former EIMP (see also the summary, in French only) as been implemented at Parc national d'Aiguebelle. A total of 19 indicators are monitored. An indicator is specific to the park, in this case, the monitoring of plants found on the rocky escarpments. The Lac Sault rock face is home to unusual plant life, since it is full of small veins of calcium carbonate. In this environment, calcareous plants can grow. This phenomenon is surprising, since several of these plants are located far away from their normal distribution range. A rare plant in the park, the small fern, Gymnocarpium jessoense, is one of these. This is an excellent bioindicator because it needs a very specific habitat to survive.
