Fishing is a great excuse for adventure and exploration, but with such a huge array of choices, it may be hard to identify the package that will allow you to step out of your comfort zone.

When it comes to moose, Réserve faunique de Matane is second to none. The Gaspé wildlife reserve is legendary among hunters who rush in every fall season to track the king of the forest in the magnificent landscapes of the Chic-Choc mountains. In summer, this corner of paradise is a well-kept secret and yet there are treasures to be discovered at the foot of the mountains; over 35 lakes that are home to speckled trout and lake trout are made available to anglers with day fishing and fishing with accommodation packages. The daily catch rate and the size of the fish are right up there with some of the best registered at Sépaq destinations.

“Sépaq’s hidden treasure” is mainly known for its walleye, bear, and spruce grouse but to those who are familiar with Réserve faunique Ashuapmushuan, it is also a favorite spot for fishing the indigenous speckled trout. The start of the season is a good time for angling as trout in some lakes average well over a pound. In addition, each year, anglers walk away with fish that weigh over three pounds. And as if that were not enough, you may want to consider combining bear hunting and fishing. It’s possible to do so, you know!

Réserve faunique de Papineau-Labelle stretches over 1,600 km2 and includes 740 lakes, 600 of which are far off the beaten tracks. Adventure fishing is designed for anglers who, map and compass in hand, are ready to discover new waterways. These bodies of fresh water are home to over a dozen sport species, including walleye, speckled trout, lake trout, landlocked salmon, rainbow trout, bass, pike, and splake. The fishing access fee must be paid no later than 48 hours ahead of time by telephone. You can also pay directly at a registration centre or by visiting an authorized distributor.

I’ve mentioned Lac-Kénogami as one of the ideal destination for an introduction to fishing; vacationers are familiar with Centre touristique du Lac-Kénogami, but it also holds opportunities for anglers. Access to one of the province’s most beautiful lakes, a waterway teeming with freshwater salmon.

Extend your season with muskellunge fishing
At most Sépaq destinations, the fishing season usually closes the first week of September. Réserve faunique de Portneuf is a glorious exception: it welcomes anglers, keen to relish the best of the muskellunge fishing season, into October. You then have the possibility of combining small game hunting and fishing and of enjoying fall to the fullest.
