Réserve faunique du Saint‑Maurice

There are about a hundred lakes in 5 accommodations sectors:

• Lac Brown
• Lac Dunbar
• Lac Normand/Baude
• Lac Tousignant/Soucis
• Lac Wessonneau

For fishing activities with accommodations, the fishing plan of Réserve faunique du Saint-Maurice is determined in advance and approved by Québec's Minister of the Environment, the Fight Against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks.

Catch and possession limits:

• Pike: 3
• Kokanee: 2
• Speckled trout: 7
• Landlocked salmon: 2
• Lake trout: 2

Some bodies of water have more restrictive catch limits in order to preserve fishing quality and the duration of the season.

Book

Small game may be hunted over a longer stay. Use of hunting dogs (flushers, retrievers, or pointers) is allowed. ATVs are allowed only in the Wessonneau sector, only for hunters whose cabin is in this area.

You may harvest the following species: Ruffed Grouse, Spruce Grouse, and snowshoe hare.

You can also hunt migratory birds if you have a migratory game bird hunting permit in addition to a small game hunting licence.

Statistics

Small game hunting is available by the day. Hunters must purchase their right of access on line or at the reserve. The species you can hunt are Ruffed Grouse, Spruce Grouse and snowshoe hare.

During the hunting season with accommodation, the day hunting is practiced on the daily hunting area (246.6 km²). Subsequently, day hunting takes place throughout the territory. The use of an ATV is prohibited at all times.

Note: Before your day of small game hunting, you must buy your access right online. Registration Centre will be closed as of November 4, 2024. It will therefore no longer be possible to purchase access rights on site.

• October 4 to 20, 2024 (day hunting sectors only)
• October 21 to November 24, 2024 (whole territory)

Réserve faunique du Saint-Maurice belongs to provincial hunting zone #26 West. Moose hunting is limited by quota in the wildlife reserve and is subject to random draw. The territory is divided into 22 hunting sectors.

Harvesting of males and calves is allowed each year and a certain number of licences for hunting females are assigned each autumn by random draw. ATVs are permitted in hunting sectors only, until moose pick up.

Density: over 3.2 animals/10 km²

Several rivers run through Réserve faunique du Saint-Maurice. The ones most easily accessible for wading are:

• Rivière Wessonneau (Chute du Vent: Fly fishing only)
• Ruisseau des Américains 
• Ruisseau du Castor Noir (Chute Dunbar: Fly fishing only)

No reservation is needed. Just pick up your right of access at the registration centre.

The circuits through Lac Soucis and Lac Tousignant provide a 22-km-long outing by canoe or kayak. One attraction of this route is a waterfall: Chute du Vent. Lac Normand is also accessible to boaters.

Experience a challenging day in the Dunbar falls canyon in Réserve faunique du Saint-Maurice. Criss-crossed by waterfalls, this gorge can be descended by foot, by swimming, by way of natural slides, by abseiling, and by jumping into the water of natural sinks called giant’s pots.

Children under 18 accompanied by an adult with a day fishing right of access are allowed to fish for free.

Free bikes for the children

Free bike loans at Lac-Normand campground for children of 17 years of age and under in a family situation. Limited quantities. First come, first served basis.

There are over 40 km of hiking trails. Their degree of difficulty ranges from easy to intermediate. Discover Dunbar and Du Vent waterfalls, peat bogs, and magnificent views.

Period: from mid-May to Labour Day

Circulation in the reserve is not allowed during the moose hunting season. In the fall, it is preferable to contact the Matawin Registration Centre (819 646-5680) before your visit.

Depending on the time of summer, wild raspberries and blueberries are abundantly available on the reserve's territory.

Package

A family package for 2 adults and their children under 18 is available early July to early September.

At All Times

In addition, children under 18 are lodged for free in relation to the number of adults at the time of reservation, based on the following criteria:

• 2 children for 5 or fewer adults
• 4 children for 6 or more adults.

Children under 18 accompanied by an adult with a day fishing right of access are allowed to fish for free.

A family hunting package under the European plan is offered by random draw at 25% off the regular price for the whole group of hunters. To be eligible, a young hunter between 12 and 17 years old must actively participate in the hunt and be present during the entire trip.

Du Plateau campground in the Lac Normand sector is a site for groups of up to 75 people.

The group campgrounds in the wildlife reserves allow young people to camp for a rate of $8 per person per night. This activity is free for children in a family situation. You can book by phone at 819-646-5680.
