Spiny water flea detection: precautions to limit its spread

The spiny water flea, an invasive aquatic species, has been detected in the Réservoir Baskatong, on the south-eastern edge of Réserve faunique La Vérendrye. This species can have negative impacts on the aquatic ecosystem by reducing food resources and disrupting the food chain.

To limit the spread of the spiny water flea, it's essential to properly clean your personal watercraft before launching it in other bodies of water. You should also inspect your equipment that has been in contact with the water (trailer, motor, livewell, fishing gear, etc.) and remove any adhering organisms. Furthermore, you need to empty and drain all water from your equipment, then clean and dry it.

Réserve faunique La Vérendrye offers five cleaning stations for personal watercraft. These stations are accessible at all times during the summer period. Their use is free of charge.

Several other stations are available in neighbouring municipalities. They can be located on the Forêtouverte website.
