Application of the Charter of the French language

Sépaq, like all Québec government ministries, agencies, and enterprises, must respect the Charter of the French language (the "Charter") and the regulations and policies that stem from it concerning the use of French in the course of its activities.

Changes to the Charter of the French language

The Act respecting French, the official and common language of Québec adopted on June 1, 2022, amended the Charter. These amendments enshrined French as the sole official and common language of Québec. In addition, the Charter now stipulates that the civil administration (including Québec government ministries and agencies, among others) shall, in an exemplary manner, use the French language, promote its quality, ensure its development in Québec and protect it.

By virtue of these amendments to the Charter, Sépaq must in particular

  • adopt a language directive detailing the situations in which it intends to use a language other than French.
  • provide for measures to ensure that communication with the public is exclusively in French, with the exceptions provided for by law.

Under the new requirements, Sépaq can, among other things, communicate with customers in another language, in addition to French, when providing tourism services.

Depending on the situation, you may receive some communications in both English and French, whereas in the past you received them in English only.

For further information, please consult the State Language Policy (in French only).
