To ensure the long-term sustainability of resources and to foster the rational use of its territory, Réserve faunique de Papineau-Labelle has invested a great deal of time and considerable amounts of money in acquiring knowledge and carrying out numerous wildlife development activities since 1998.
The forest of Réserve faunique de Papineau-Labelle is exploited by the logging industry under timber supply and forest management agreements (CAAF) awarded by the Québec Department of Natural Resources and Wildlife. With a view to better harmonizing forestry practices with the activities offered in the reserve, Sépaq has initiated discussion with the industry so that measures will be applied to minimize resource use conflicts and impacts on the biodiversity, landscape and ambiance of these recreational activities.
Réserve faunique de Papineau-Labelle consists of four exceptional forest eco-systems: the old-growth forests of Lac-de-l'Écluse, Lac-Gagnon, Lac-Devlin and Lac-Preston.
The old-growth forest of Lac-de-l'Écluse is an exceptional forest eco-stystem near the lake of the same name in Val-des-Bois, Outaouais. It shelters a sugar maple-yellow birch stand that has never been disturbed by fire, diseases or humans for several hundred years. Certain yellow birches are over 400 years old.
The old-growth forest of Lac-Gagnon is an exceptional forest system 2 km east of Lac Gagnon in Duhamel. This 58-hectare forest shelters a hemlock spruce - yellow birch stand that has not suffered any major disruptions for 400 years.
The old-growth forest of Lac-Devlin is a "virgin" eco-system that has never been developed or affected by severe natural disruptions for over 300 years. It is characterized by an abundance of dead wood and the remarkable size of some trees. Located less than 50 km west of Saint-Jovite, it is part of the western sugar maple-yellow birch stand and is dominated by deciduous species and certain coniferous species, such as the hemlock or the Eastern white cedar.
The old-growth forest of Lac-Preston is an exceptional forest eco-system between Lac Preston and Lac Marie-Lefranc in La Minerve. It shelters a sugar maple - linden and beech stand and a hemlock spruce-yellow birch stand that have not been disturbed for over 400 years.
