The largest member of the deer family in Québec is everywhere in Réserve faunique de Matane. Over 4,000 moose share 1,275 km2, an incredible population density! Moose hunters agree that this reserve is a mecca for their sport in Québec. A moose interpretation centre and a wide range of observation and interpretive activities are available for those who want to learn more about this animal. There are also a number of mountain peaks close to 1,000 metres high. Hikers, anglers and hunters can admire breathtaking views from atop these vantage points

The International Appalachian Trail cuts though the wildlife reserve for over 100 km. The trails, classified easy to very difficult, follow the ridges and summits that rise almost 1,000 metres in altitude. Hiking is the only way you can reach Chute Hélène, a waterfall 70 metres high!
This interesting educational exhibition has many pieces and several themes, such as the role of antlers, seasons in the life of a moose, other animals on the wildlife reserve, the history of hunting, etc.
Before sunset, slip into your walking shoes and get your camera ready for the moose photo safari. Learn more about the influence of mud flats on moose density and antler growth. This guided activity takes place at the end of the day. Moose can be observed in different habitats depending on the period of summer.
A new activity is now available! Canyoning alternates between hiking, rappelling, and swimming and involves making your way through a rugged and steep-sided valley. This 8-hour activity is offered by our partner Eskamer and takes place on a stream, Ruisseau Beaulieu, that flows by the base of Mont Nicol-Albert. You'll be fully equipped from your head to your feet, as well as provided with meals and snacks.

The concentration of moose living in Réserve faunique de Matane is one of the largest in Québec. The reserve is divided into 34 hunting sectors. Moose hunting stays are assigned through random draw. After being assigned, some stays may remain unclaimed and thus become available once more.
Certain moose hunting sectors are offered under the American plan, including meals and the services of an experienced guide for 2 or 4 hunters. This type of package is available at Étang-à-la-truite and the Chic-Chocs Mountain Lodge. Other stays are available under the European plan.
Density: 33 animals/10 km2, according to the 2012 inventory
Bear hunting packages are offered with accommodations in fully-equipped cabins. During your stay, take advantage of an expert's advice and benefit from quality services (watchtower on baited sites, meat storage and animal registration). You’ll also have access to a fishing territory.

A rustic shelter is an ideal compromise between a cabin and a tent. Mius rustic shelter has four bunk beds with mattresses, tables and chairs, lighting, refrigerator, stove and dishes and pots for cooking. There is a pit toilet nearby.
Réserve faunique de Matane offers semi-serviced and serviced campsites. There are two campgrounds: the first is near the John Registration Centre and the second is near Étang à la truite. The campsites are open and sunny. A group campsite accommodates 10 to 20 campers.

Several primitive campsites that are accessible on foot are spread along the International Appalachian Trail, which cuts through Réserve faunique de Matane. The campsites are 8 to 15 km from the starting point. The trail to the sites is classified intermediate to difficult.
