At the heart of the Gaspé Peninsula, the Chic-Chocs Appalachian chain is the very backbone of this forest-covered peninsula. Réserve faunique des Chic-Chocs lies adjacent to Parc national de la Gaspésie to the east. A part of the reserve is even surrounded by this park. This geographical location, at the periphery of a protected territory, makes the reserve a favourite site for wildlife.

Wildlife and Other Developments
The development mission of Réserve faunique des Chic-Chocs has also led the reserve to carry out a wildlife development project to maximize its fishing potential.
A Three-Year Wildlife Development Program
Since April 2002, a three-year wildlife development program has been underway. This program mainly concerns brook trout, lake trout and moose. An aquatic habitat characterization will be prepared for each of the lakes being used. Thereafter, development work will be undertaken with a view to preserving or increasing the productivity of these lakes. This work will seek to improve reproduction, fry rearing, feeding and rest areas, while maintaining unrestricted circulation between each of these sites.
Strict Management of Wildlife Harvesting
Four main species are harvested on the territory of Réserve faunique des Chic-Chocs. They are brook trout, lake trout, moose and bear. In addition, Spruce Grouse, Ruffed Grouse, American Marten and American Woodcock are subject to limited harvesting. With a view to ensuring sustainable harvesting activities, a management plan for each of the main species is being prepared. However, as a management plan has no value if it is not accompanied by a rigorous harvesting follow-up, we expect all hunters and fishers to
cooperate closely with our personnel.
A Harmonization of Wildlife Harvesting with Logging Activities
The forest of Réserve faunique des Chic-Chocs is exploited by the logging industry under timber supply and forest management agreements (CAAF) awarded by the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune du Québec.
