Mission Statement
The mission of Parc national d'Oka is to protect an area representative of the region known as the St. Lawrence Lowlands, in particular its southern portion.
Natural Environment
Located on the shores of Lac des Deux-Montagnes about 50 kilometres from Montréal, Parc national d'Oka includes the Oka Calvary, a Way of the Cross in a natural setting.
In geophysical terms, the park's lands are among the richest in Québec, due to a particularly mild climate, the sedimentary rock of the subsoil, clay and sand deposits, and the presence of the Rivière des Outaouais. Fields, both cultivated and lying fallow, are also representative of the region's agricultural development in the recent past.
Covering an area of 23.7 sq. km., the park harbours several plant associations, including sugar maple/hickory stands (typical of southern Québec) around the Calvaire, and on the eastern hill, silver maple stands by the Rivière-aux-Serpents and Grande Baie, white pine forest in the camping area and oak stands on the shores of Lac des Deux-Montagnes.
In the spring, thousands of flowers carpet the forest floor. In fall, the park blazes with colour.
In Grande Baie and Rivière-aux-Serpents, earth and water come together to create wetlands of astounding ecological richness. Almost tropical in appearance, they are home to a fascinating variety of plant and animal life. The magnificent Wood Duck, which was an endangered species at the beginning of the 20th century, has become a common seasonal resident in the park wetlands, Québec's most productive nesting grounds.
