Major Research Orientations at Parc national du Mont-Saint-Bruno

Having extensive knowledge of the parks to better preserve them is the foundation that justifies the efforts invested in inventories, monitoring programs and scientific research.

On the park’s territory, floristic inventories confirmed the presence of 24 plant species known for the scarcity of their populations in Québec. Special attention is paid to the exact location of these plants using cartography and photography. Inventorying and monitoring work is being conducted with the most vulnerable species to document their development over time.

This knowledge is essential to guaranteeing the integrity of particularly sensitive resources. It helps the park better direct development activities to mitigate negative impacts.

Among the plants considered rare at Parc national du Mont-Saint-Bruno, three species are legally designated threatened and eight are recognized as vulnerable. Thirteen other species have been identified as likely to be designated threatened or vulnerable.

Spiders in Our Trees

Parc national du Mont-Saint-Bruno served as the site for a study to inventory and compare tree and shrub arthropods (spiders).

It’s not easy to take samples above the forest...

Using a portable aerial platform, various insect traps were installed up to the top of the trees in five of the park’s forest stands. The results show that the wildlife in southern Québec’s maple canopy is distinct from that of the shrub stratum.

The canopy contains arthropod species that live only in treetops or that are closely associated with them. The species composition is complementary to that of the shrub stratus. Species diversity varies considerably from one park to another.

Certain species found at Parc national du Mont-Saint-Bruno have not yet been seen elsewhere in Québec.
