Mission Statement
Parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie aims to protect an exceptional site that is part of the Laurentian massif of northern Québec and that includes the highest rock faces in Eastern Canada.
Natural Environment
Parc national des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie is an exceptional site from both a geomorphological and an ecological standpoint, a living testimonial to the titanic natural forces that shaped its stunning, rugged features. Two major geological phenomena shaped this landscape, the movements of the Earth's crust that gave rise to the Canadian Shield, and the advance and retreat of the glaciers. The park contains all the geomorphological formations typical of an alpine environment affected by
glacial movement: glacial troughs, hanging valleys, cirques, rock basins, and riegels.
The park also boasts numerous waterfalls and cascades, many of which plunge over 100 metres down the slopes of the main valleys. The drainage basin of this section of Rivière Malbaie also has some 100 lakes, most at altitudes of 600 to 900 metres. These lovely bodies of water add to the park's appeal, and their abundant aquatic wildlife is one of its numerous attractions. Find out more about
