A Little History

When in 1535, Jacques Cartier first heard tell of the Saguenay, the region was inhabited by Innus, who were then called Montagnais. This Algonquian nation gave Lac Kénogami its name, which means "long lake", the large elongated body of water that is the source of the Chicoutimi River. At the time, Lac Kénogami was in the centre of a communication network linking the Saguenay to Lac Saint-Jean, and further north, to James Bay. For a little over 250 years, canoes loaded with furs navigated Lac Kénogami on their way to Tadoussac trading posts, and then, starting in 1671 to the Chicoutimi trading post.

Although owned by the Hudson's Bay Company, the region remained closed to colonisation. It was not until 1838 that members of the Société des Vingt-et-Un, obtained lumber cutting rights, founding the first establishments of the area. In 1889 on the banks of Lac Kénogami, the former Cascouïa mission officially became the Saint-Cyriac parish. At the turn of the century, tourists started to visit Lac Kénogami on the steamboat called the Maria Nina. In 1923, construction began on two dams at the east of the lake, to allow industries to control the flow of the Chicoutimi River. The die was cast: the following year, Saint-Cyriac was flooded due to the rising level of the lake. The vacation spot began to expand rapidly around 1940 when cabins, watersports and fishing attracted tourists and vacationers to the lake. The Lac Kénogami Campground welcomed its first visitors in 1976. In 1990, the Société des établissements de plein air du Québec, manager of the site from then on, carried out extensive renovations on the peninsula. Because of its beautiful landscapes and top-quality services, Centre touristique du Lac-Kénogami has since built an enviable reputation among Québec outdoor resorts and vacation destinations.
